Francis Vaughan Hawkins (1833 – April 22, 1908) was born in London in 1833, the eldest son of Francis Hawkins, a Doctor of Medicine. He received his early education at Harrow School, where he established himself as an eminent classic, before entering Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was admitted at age 17 in October 1849 and matriculated in October 1850. During his university years, he achieved exceptional academic distinction, winning the Camden Medal in 1851, the Browne Medal in 1851 and 1852, the Pitt Scholar in 1852, and the First Chancellor's Medal in 1854. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1854 as a 41st Wrangler and Senior Classic, later earning his Master of Arts in 1857 and securing a Fellowship at Trinity College in 1854. In addition to his academic accolades, he was a member of the Cambridge Apostles.
Following his achievements at Cambridge, Hawkins pursued a legal career. He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in December 1850 and was called to the Bar in January 1856, subsequently practicing as an equity draftsman and conveyancer. His legal expertise was further recognized when he became a bencher in 1899. A notable scholar of legal literature, he published A Concise Treatise on the Construction of Wills. Alongside his legal profession, Hawkins was a man of diverse physical pursuits, noted as being of the first rank in mountaineering and holding membership in the Alpine Club, as recorded in Sir Francis Galton's Memories. He spent his later life unmarried and passed away on April 22, 1908, in Newick, Wimbledon, Surrey.
